Menopause

Menopause: Even if you’re not in menopause, you probably know someone who is dealing with it.

What is Menopause: It’s the phase of a woman’s life when she is no longer capable of reproduction. This occurs due to loss of ovarian function as the production of the female hormones, Estrogen and Progesterone is almost non-existent. The period leading up to it is marked by gradually declining hormone production and is referred to as Premenopause.

When does Menopause begin:
The range for menopause is anywhere between 45 and 55 years of age with a mean of 51.2 in the US. The age of menopause is largely genetic.  Premenopause begins a few years before that. Typically, if a woman has not had a menstrual cycle over the course of a year, she is in menopause.

What are some “typical” Menopause symptoms?
The most common symptom experienced by 80 percent of women during menopause are hot flashes (daytime) or night sweats. Some women may also experience muscle and joint pain (arthralgia), mood swings, loss of libido, weight gain and “brain fog”.(to name a few). Others develop vulvo-vaginal dryness as well as overactive bladder symptoms and difficulty with sexual intimacy. Many women begin to develop insulin resistance and diabetes, osteoporosis and arthritis; all caused by hormonal deficiencies. Intimacy can become painful due to vaginal dryness.

What are proven solutions to relieving the symptoms of Menopause?
After menopause, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is often prescribed to resupply the body with the hormones it no longer produces. Discuss this with your doctor. As with any medication, there are risks and benefits, and each woman should decide if HRT is the right choice for her.

Currently there are numerous alternative prescription and non-prescription options as well. Not all of them involve the use of hormones.

For many women who are suffering from the painful symptoms of menopause including dryness, atrophy and pain with intimacy, Monalisa Touch can be an excellent alternative to hormones. The Monalisa Touch is an FDA supported in-office procedure without any hormones or chemical that is upto 80% effective. It is appropriate for any woman who is experiencing symptoms after menopause, hysterectomy or breast cancer treatments. This therapy is particularly well suited for patients who cannot use estrogen therapy, prefer to avoid estrogen therapy, or who have persistent symptoms despite estrogen therapy.
